BSNA President Elect, Dr. Om sharma, his lovely wife, Manju and Mr. Kamla.J. Sharma from New Jersey were the Chief guests. Meeting started around 4:30 PM with introduction by the Virginia Chapter President of BSNA, Dr. Janeshwar Upadhyay and Vice President, Shri Upendra Pandey. Dr. Om Sharma, thanked everyone for supporting him to be elected as the new BSNA President. He spoke on his goal and future planning for BSNA. He said, his first goal will be to create unity among BSNA members, unity with other similar organizations, activate inactive Chapters of BSNA and motivate members to help each other and help people in need, here in USA and in India. In addition, he wants to create more awareness of High School and College BSNA Scholarship Program. Last year, for lack of good publicity, only one student applied for four available scholarships, thus none was awarded. He also has a goal to create a Central place like community center for BSNA for getting together and meetings of BSNA members. Dr. J. Upadhyay, VA-BSNA President asked him what relationship BSNA has or plans to have with WBF of Chaubey Ji. He said BSNA wants a good and cooperative relationship with any organization without losing its own identity and independence.
Dr. Lok Shandilya had to leave early because of his prior commitment, however, other members and guests like Ajay Purohit and his wife, Sadhna, Hari Sharma and his wife, Shashi, Ajay Jha and his wife Amrita, Vinit Thakur and his wife, Mamta from New Jersey, Dr. Upadhyay's sons and daughter-in-laws, Sadanand, Sunita, Suman, Manju, Punam and Upadhyay's wife Purnima, host, Shri Upendra Ji and his wife, Siddhi Ji, and Manju's father, Shri Hari Om Narayan Jha, visiting from India, all participated in the meeting.

VA-BSNA DIWALI AND CONVENTION MEETING MINUTES
VA-BSNA DIWALI AND CONVENTION MEETING was held on Sunday, October 25, 2009 around 1:30 PM at 1170 Cumberland Drive, Colonial Heights, VA. 23834. The meeting started with welcome, introduction and prayer. Dr. Janeshwar Upadhyay, President of VA-BSNA Chapter, gave a brief importance and meaning of Diwali. He said that Diwali is celebrated by lighting a row of lamps that symbolizes brightness, happiness and knowledge. As with one burning lamp, we can light next lamp and with that lamp next lamp and next lamp and so on. These lamps together brighten a wide area. The same way we can join hands and help each other and pass on knowledge to make a whole society happy.
Dr. Upadhyay expressed some concern about the blaspheme of our Hindu gods and goddesses and desecration of our temples in order to shake Hindu faith and create non-reverence of our gods and goddesses. He referred to the E-mail sent him showing some of the paintings of M.F. Hussain and asked VA-BSNA members to take action to protect our Hindu faith and belief. This issue was actively discussed and it was unanimously resolved that VA-BSNA condemns such action and requests BSNA to take an appropriate action to prevent such action in the future. Dr. Upadhyay also suggested that buying and keeping such paintings by any Hindu will be considered as encouraging and supporting the desecration of our gods and goddesses that should be condemned as well. Dr. Rajendra Dubey of Richmond stated that Hussain's paintings have been a very controversial issue for a long time but the E-mail pictures are genuine or not should be researched before any action. This responsibility was given to Dr. Dubey with unanimous consent. Mr. Satawart Upadhyay, grand son of Dr. Upadhyay took the responsibility to research Hussain's criminal charges and his whereabouts.
Dr. Upadhyay announced that with the consent of several members, VA-BSNA has accepted a big responsibility of holding the sixteenth BSNA Annual Convention in Virginia during the 4th of July weekend of 2010. This message was taken as an honor to our Chapter and every one got excited about it. Dr. Upadhyay described briefly what it takes to prepare for it and what is done during the convention.
He suggested that first we have to decide for a date and place for the convention, a convention Theme, registration and fund raising and then food, transportation and multiple activities during the convention. A joint effort and divided responsibilities for different tasks is needed.
It was decided with unanimous consent that Richmond area will be a central and ideal location for all practical purposes. The date of July 3-4, 2010 was suggested and accepted by all. Several themes were suggested Dr. Upadhyay started with, Why Brahman, Dr. Ram Tripathi of Hampton suggested, Relevance of Hindutva value in Human life, Dr. Hari Sharma of Chester suggested, BSNA by the youth and for the youth. Dr. Dubey suggested that we can decide the theme later. Then we moved on to forming committees for different Convention tasks. Dr. Dubey suggested that Dr. Upadhyay should leave all the convention tasks to the committees and he should look after over all performance of the committees and success of the convention. Dr. Dubey took the task of place to hold convention and food catering service. He suggested, MRS. Purnima Upadhyay to be the food coordinating director. Mrs. Sunita Upadhyay volunteered for Bhajan, puja and Aarati. Mrs. Manju Singha wanted to organize a Janeva making and its meaning workshop, Mrs. Punam Singh agreed to assist during registration, Miss Jytsna Upadhyay agreed to coordinate youth group program and organize their activities.
Dr. Upadhyay asked for the Director
for the Convention. Dr. Tripathi sggested Dr. Upadhyay to be
the Director and Dr. Rajendra Dubey as the Co-Director. This
was Unanimously accepted. Mr. Sadanand Upadhyay agreed to work
with Director and Co-Director as an Operation Director.
Dr. Hari Sharma agreed to take the task of the treasurer. Although,
Dr. Lok Nath Shandiliya could not come to the meeting but his
name was suggested as the Director of fund raising committee.
Youth group suggested several ideas of fund raising and organizing
program activities.
Dr. Upadhyay suggested that Virginia Chapter alone cannot handle the whole Convention, therefore, we have to get other BSNA chapters involved thus many of the responsibilities may change. He said that he will like to have a meeting of VA chapter with experienced previous convention directors, like Dr. Satish Mishra of MD and Mr. Mahendra Misra of PA, Dr. Purushottam Sharma, current President and Dr. Om Sharma, President elect of BSNA and several other members from the surrounding states' Chapters, some time in January and a P-meeting in February or March of 2010.
Delicious lunch was served during the meeting and every one enjoyed lunch and the meeting.
The meeting adjourned around 4:30 PM.
Respectfully submitted by,
Janeshwar Upadhyay, President
Virginia Chapter of BSNA
GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING ELECTION OF BSNA OFFICERS
I. PURPOSE
The Nominations & Election Committee (NEC) seeks nominations and conducts elections, if and when necessary, for the seven positions that make up the core Executive Committee (EC) as prescribed in the BSNA constitution. The seven elected positions are:
President
Executive Vice President
Vice President (2 positions)
General Secretary
Treasurer
Assistant Treasurer
II. GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATIONS
Any member of the General Body (GB) in good standing may nominate another member in good standing as a candidate for the position of President.
A member in 'good standing' means a current annual member, a life member or his/her spouse as of July 31st of the year the election is being conducted.
Another GB member must second the nomination.
It is expected that the nominee for President is a respected member of BSNA who has made outstanding contributions for the enhancement of the organization. The candidate for the office of the President must be able to find eligible BSNA members from all over North America to fill other six positions in EC. The candidate for the president must be a team player and works effectively with other EC members and the members of the BSNA. It is required that the candidates to fill EC positions must not be concentrated in one state, and at least one member of the EC should be from Canada.
The nominations must be sent in writing to the NEC Chair via US mail or E-mail, and should include the contact information (e-mail, phone numbers, home address) of the nominee, nominator and the seconder.
Additionally, the NEC members may seek out potential candidates and invite them to seek election provided they fulfill the criteria set out for president and other EC members earlier
III. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Any GB member in good standing who is willing to accept the position of the BSNA's President and discharge all duties of the office as prescribed in the BSNA constitution is eligible to seek election. The following information must be submitted to the NEC or necessary actions must be completed by the candidate, by the deadline:
-
A list of running mates and their acceptance to serve with him/her as members of the EC in the positions of the Executive Vice President, two Vice Presidents, General Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer.
A position paper and bio-data of the candidate for President for publication in Brahma Bharati, or other venues chosen by NEC for disseminating information about the candidates. The one-page position paper should describe the candidate's qualifications for the position and his/her vision and plans for BSNA during his/her term.
Each person included in the EC list must confirm individually and directly to the NEC chair via e-mail his/her willingness to be a candidate for the office proposed by the candidate for the president.
The candidate for president must have leadership skills and communication skills
Must have interpersonal skills and work as a team player and puts organization above his personal ideas
IV. THE COMMITTEE'S ROLE
-
NEC publicizes the guidelines and deadlines for the election schedule by all feasible and effective means available
-
If no nominations are received by the deadline date then NEC proposes a candidate who they think could best serve BSNA as President
-
If the NEC receives several nominations, the NEC members would discuss with the nominees their vision and plans for BSNA, and also make an effort to build a consensus for a single candidate. If the NEC succeeds, then all nominees, except one, withdraw their nominations in favor of the one for whom the consensus was reached.
-
No ballots are prepared/ mailed, the election process is considered completed and the NEC announces the results if:
-
The consensus is reached in support of one candidate.
-
Only one candidate completes all requirements by the deadline.
-
-
If no consensus is reached, then the NEC will advise those candidates, who still want to contest the election, to submit their slates of proposed EC members. The proposed slate should have a broad based representation of BSNA membership, have the potential of uniting BSNA, and have the best vision and plans for the enhancement, strengthening and expansion of BSNA.
-
The NEC makes plans for conducting election in the following manner:
-
The NEC advises the candidates if a proposed running mate has given consents to be included in the slates of more than one candidate which would disqualify both slates. To avoid such disqualification, the running mate must inform the NEC immediately of his/her choice of the presidential candidate on whose EC team he/she is willing to be placed.
-
The NEC verifies that all candidates are members of BSNA in good standing as defined above.
-
The NEC informs the presidential candidates who are disqualified because they were unable to submit certain documents or their documents were found inadequate by the proposed deadline.
-
The names of the nominees and their running mates (the team making up the full EC) will be published in a special edition of Brahma Bharati or announced via e-mail to all current officers of BSNA (EC), the BSNA Board of Trustees, and all BSNA chapter presidents for disseminating information about the candidates to the BSNA members. The names will also be posted on the BSNA home page.
-
NEC will prepare ballots to be mailed out in September to all current members in BSNA database as of July 31st of the election year. For this purpose first class US mail will be used.
-
Members will be given at least 3 weeks (from the date of mailing the ballots) to return the ballot to the NEC Chair via first class mail. NO E-MAIL OR FAX WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR VOTING PURPOSE.
-
NEC Chair will count the ballots, and will have it verified by another member. The exact procedure will be worked out based on logistical convenience.
-
After the counts have been verified, the results will be conveyed to the candidates via phone. The results will be posted on the BSNA homepage and published in the following issue of Brahma Bharati.
-
-
The entire election process described above is expected to be completed by mid-November.
-
The newly elected EC's term starts from the 1st January following the election year. The incoming President and outgoing President are expected to work together for a smooth transition.

Message from the Youth President
Dear Youth,
Hi! I wanted to take a few minutes to invite you all to the up coming convention this July. For those of you who have not attended a Brahman Samaj convention, you are missing out! Last year the youth had so much fun getting to know each other and spending the weekend together. From this event, I made so many friends and I am glad I had an opportunity to attend the Convention. For the parents that are reading this, please inform your children about this convention. On another note, if anyone has any ideas of something that we can do to make the youth group better and stronger. Please feel free to let me know. I am always ready to hear your ideas. Thank you and hope to see you all soon! Aradhna Sharma (hum5@msn.com). Below is my report of 2008 convention.
A Thread of Common Values Unites Diverse People
By Aradhna Sharma, President of BSNA Youth Group
When it was decided the 2008 Brahman Samaj convention was to be held in Sacramento, all I could think about was how excited I was to meet new people with the same background. I still cannot get over the support and ideas I received from the youth all over. Overall, the convention turned out to be a great event where many youth from different states and the same cultural values had the chance to get to know one another.
Starting on Friday the 4th of July, the youth got together in the evening after dinner for an ice-cream social. Following that, we watched fireworks together and then a few of us even went for a late night swim. On Saturday the 5th, after breakfast and Puja many different sessions took
place. The youth all got together for awhile in the lobby at first and then made our way into a room where we spent time getting to know each other even more. We watched movies and talked about everything from school to our families. Many of us found we had so much in common. After this session there was a panel discussion at which what it means to be a Brahman was discussed. Varun Aery’s input during the discussion was much valued. Joining Varun Aery was also Himanshu Sharma and I, Aradhna Sharma for this intriguing debate. Following the discussion there was a variety show in which many youth participated and
supported each other. It was a well organized show that kept everyone entertained for a few hours. Later on after dinner, the parents went off to do their own things and the children danced the night away to the DJ’s great music. Sunday morning after a few speeches and breakfast it was just about time to say goodbye. This was a time that I know many of us were dreading. It was hard saying bye to the people we had just spend three fun-filled days with where we got to learn not only about each other, but about our culture and religion too.

Members of the youth group at the convention
Through this convention I was able to meet people from all around the world with whom I can relate with really well. I still talk to many of them on a daily basis! The first time I ever attended a convention was in 1998 where I happened to meet one of my best friends and this time I made many friends who have now become like family. I learned about what it means to be a Brahman and many of the reasons of why I should be proud of who I am.
I would also like to say a quick thank you to the EC for continually supporting us through all this and of course the convention director, Mr. Pardeep Sharma, who happens to be my father for making the 2008 convention a successful one. The EC was sure to include the youth in everything it did and ensured us that we were an important part of this organization. For all the youth who were not able to attend the convention or for those who are not yet interested, I cannot even begin to tell you how much you are missing out on. Our generation will one day run this Samaj so it is imperative we participate all we can.
Overall the convention was a success and it is owed to everyone who put in a great deal of energy and effort. Thank you all for coming and being a part of this event.
Thank you Rita Tiwari and Himanshu Sharma
for helping put this letter together!

Message from 2009 BSNA Convention Director
The convention committee after a hard search and talking to several
hotels has selected Wyndham Hotel in Princeton,
New Jersey as the venue for the 15th BSNA Convention to be
held from July 3 to July 5, 2009.
We are all aware of the hard economic time, we are going through.
However life goes on. Hard economic time is also affecting the hospitality
industry and we were able to get the hotel at a very reasonable price.
We at the convention committee are sure you would like your stay at
the hotel. In hard times, hate crimes increase against minorities
and it is more important now than ever that we all actively participate
in Indian Organizations at local and national level. Our focus in
the convention is on youth and we seek their active participation.
We also seek their input in designing the convention program. The
convention theme is Brahmans as Communicators.
Being educators/leaders in the society Brahmans were good communicators.
Those who had studied Bhagwat Gita know that the best communicator
to walk on the earth was Lord Krishna in Mahabharat. Miscommunication
or lack of it causes lot of problems at work and at home. No celebration
is possible without the guests. NJ, NY, and PA chapters are looking
forward to welcome you all at the convention. Mahendra Misra Convention
Director (mahendramisra@hotmail.com)
Arrival of Brahmans from India
In the decades of 1940’s and 1950’s engineers and scientists from India came to North America only for graduate studies or training. After completion of their studies/training they would usually go back to India. However, with a change in the immigration policy of the US government, a large influx of immigrants from India came to North America in late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Among these immigrants were a large number of well-educated Brahmans, most of whom were engineers, doctors, scientists and professors. They came here with an intention of making North America their homeland. Within a decade most of the Brahmans became U.S. and Canadian citizens.
Need for a Brahman Organization
As early as in 1979 a proposal was made to start an Association of U.S. Brahmans, when Dr. Shri Kant Mishra went to Fayetteville, Arkansas to perform the marriage of the daughter of Mr. Dwarka Prasad Mishra, a local resident. About ten Brahmans from different part of the country were present there. The effort continued for two years. Although more than 25 Brahmans from all over the USA had shown interest in joining the organization, the movement lost its momentum.
By 1990’s the new generation of Brahmans, born and brought up here, was in high schools and colleges. Their parents were concerned that this young generation of Brahmans should preserve the Brahmanic values and should not lose their rich culture. With this objective in mind, in early 1990’s several Brahmans in the United States felt the need for networking with other Brahmans. This gave birth to an idea of compiling a directory of Brahmans living in the USA and Canada for networking. Dr. Shyam Narayan Shukla of Fremont, CA was collecting names and addresses of Brahmans in order to publish a directory of Brahmans. Inspired by Dr. Rama Raksha Shukla of Massachusetts, to start an organization of Brahmans, Mr. Nirmalendu Choubey of Manlius, NY independently took the initiative of locating and contacting Brahmans for the purpose of forming an organization of Brahmans. Later, Mr. Nirmal Choubey and Dr. Shyam Shukla found about each other’s work and decided to pool their efforts to form Brahman Samaj of North America (BSNA). After several telephone calls, e-mails, and meetings held at the residences of several Brahmans in different cities, a directory of 108 Brahmans, edited by Dr. Shyam Shukla, was published in June 1994. The following Brahmans worked on this initiative:
Mr. Gajendra Mohan Mishra, Fremont, CA
Mr. Awadh Kishore Pandey, Plainville, MA
Mr. Lila Dhar Mishra, Toronto, ON, Canada
Dr. Ram D. Chaudhari, Oswego, NY
Dr. Suresh C. Tiwari, Fayette, MS
Dr. Bhudev Sharma, Metarie, LA
Dr. J. P. Dubey, Greenbelt, MD
Mr. Rajiv Dixit, Baltimore, MD
Dr. Ajay Pandey, Yorktown, VA
Dr. Satya Sheel Pachori, Jacksonville, FL
Dr. Arvind & Bhama Pathak, McLean, VA
Dr. Ganesh Pandey, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Mr. Ramesh Agnihotri, Freehold, NJ
Dr. Ramanath Sharma, Honolulu, HI
Dr. Kashi Nath Upadhyay, Honolulu, HI
Formation of BSNA
The publication of the first directory of Brahmans provided motivation to other Brahmans who became actively involved in expanding the network. In cities across the country, several Brahmans held meetings at their residences, at which Brahmans from the surrounding areas were invited. Among those who participated in those meetings held in different cities are Dr. Ghanshyam Pandey, Dr. Shyam Shukla, Dr. Suresh Tiwari, Mr. Pooran Tripathi, Dr. Hans Upadhyay, Mr. Kanwal Parashar, Mr. Tryambak Bajpay, Dr. Prabhakar Mishra, Dr. Anita Dubey, Dr. Vinod Tewary, Mr. Kailash Sharma, and Mr. Dhirendra Shukla. This is only a partial list, since many more Brahmans were contacted and participated in the meetings and telephone conversations.
Thus the original idea of developing a directory of Brahmans expanded into establishing a formal organization giving birth to the Brahman Samaj of North America (BSNA), which was formally established on 3rd September, 1994 with the adoption of an ad hoc constitution. BSNA was registered as a not-for-profit organization in the state of New York. The ad-hoc officers were:
- Mr. Nirmalendu Choubey, President
- Dr. Shyam Narayan Shukla, General Secretary
- Later Mr. Bhaw Dutt Shukla was appointed as the first Treasurer of BSNA.
A Board of Trustees was also formed with the following members:
Dr. Suresh Tiwari (Chair)
Dr. Satya Sheel Pachori
Dr. Ram Das Chaudhari
Dr. Onkar P. Dwivedi
Dr. Bhudev Sharma
Dr. Ramanath Sharma
Dr. Ghanshyam Narayan Pandey
The subsequent Chairs of BOT are Dr. Uday Naval (2000-2002) and Dr. Shri Kant Mishra (2002-present)
EC Expanded
In the year 1997 two slots were added to the Executive Committee of BSNA - Mr. Nitin Purohit as the Vice President and Dr. Satchidanand Mishra as the Assistant Treasurer and Editor of Brahmakulum (BSNA Directory).

BSNA Constitution
The ad hoc BSNA constitution was replaced by the present constitution written by the Constitution Committee consisting of Dr. Vinod Tewary (Chair), Dr. Surendra Pandey, Prof. Ramanath Sharma, Mr. Jagar Sharma and Dr. Anita Dubey. The General Body approved the new constitution in September 1997, and it became effective January 1, 1998.
BSNA Elections
The first election of BSNA was held in 1997 to elect its new officers with Dr. Satish Tripathi as the Chair of the Nominations and Election Committee (NEC). Mr. Nirmal Choubey submitted a slate of his proposed EC. Since no other nominations were submitted by the deadline, the NEC declared them elected. The members of the first Executive Committee for the term 1998-2000 were:
Mr. Nirmalendu Choubey, President
Mr. Mahendra Misra, Executive Vice President
Dr. Anita Dubey, Vice President
Mr. Manoranjan Mishra, Vice President
Dr. Surendra N. Pandey, General Secretary
Mr. Bhaw Shukla, Treasurer
Dr. Satchidanad Mishra, Assistant Treasurer & Editor, Brahmakulum.
In early 1999, Mr. Maharaj became the General Secretary, when Dr. Surendra Pandey resigned from the position. Mr. Mahendra Misra also resigned as EVP in 1999 and Mr. Jagar Sharma took his place.
The second election was held in 2000. The Nominations and Election Committee (NEC) consisted of Dr. Suresh Tiwari (Chair), Dr. Shri Kant Mishra and Dr. Rama Nath Sharma. The NEC interviewed several members and asked them if they would consider to be nominated for the position of President of BSNA and what their vision on BSNA’s future direction was. After some persuasion, Dr. Shyam Narayan Shukla agreed to submit the names of members who would be on the EC. Therefore, the NEC declared Dr. Shukla and the following members of EC elected unopposed for the term 2001-2003:
Dr. Shyam N. Shukla, President
Mr. Jagar Sharma, Executive Vice President
Dr. Ramesh C. Paliwal, Vice President
Mr. Vishva Sharma, Vice President
Mr. Abhaya Maharaj, General Secretary
Dr. Tej Pandey, Treasurer
Dr. Arvind Sharma, Assistant Treasurer & Editor, Brahmakulum
The new officers were to take over effective January 1, 2001. However, Mr. Nirmal Choubey resigned as President on September 30, 2000 and Mr. Jagar Sharma became President for the remaining period as per BSNA constitution. After the 2001 convention Mr. Nirmal Choubey resigned from BSNA as a member. Mr. Jagar Sharma resigned as EVP after the convention at Toronto in 2002, and Mr. Purushottam Sharma was selected to replace him.
The third election took place under the direction of the new NEC consisting of Dr. Surendra Pandey (Chair), Mr. Nitin Purohit and Dr. Satchidanand Mishra. Although there were other candidates who had expressed their desire to contest the election, they did not supply required information by the deadline, leaving Dr. Shukla as the only candidate in the field with his EC team. Therefore, NEC declared the following as elected officers for the term 2004-06, to assume office starting January 1, 2004:
Dr. Shyam N. Shukla, President
Mr. Purushottam Sharma, Executive Vice President
Mr. Lila Dhar Mishra, Vice President
Mrs. Renu Sharma, Vice President
Dr. Umesh Shukla, General Secretary
Dr. Shrigopal P. Sharma, Treasurer
Dr. Arvind Sharma, Assistant Treasurer & Editor, Brahmakulum
BSNA Publications
There are three publications of BSNA. They are: (1) Brahma Bharati, a quarterly, newsletter, (2) Brahma-Vani, an annual souvenir magazine, published at the time of conventions, and (3) Brahmakulum, the BSNA Directory. In addition, (4) BSNA also publishes a Homepage on the web as www.bsna.org.
1. Brahma Bharati
The first issue of Brahma Bharati, BSNA’s quarterly newsletter, was published in December 1994 with Dr. Vinod Tewary as its editor. Subsequent editors of Brahma Bharati are Mrs. Nirmala Shukla (1999-2000) and Dr. Surendra Pandey (2000-present).
2. Brahma-Vani
After the first BSNA convention it was decided that a souvenir magazine called Brahma-Vani be published every year at the time of the convention. Dr. Satish Misra was appointed Editor of Brahma-Vani and the first issue was published at the time of the second convention (July 1996) at Reading PA. The magazine included some scholarly articles related to the theme of the convention and some advertisements to raise funds for BSNA. Dr. Misra has been the editor of Brahma-Vani ever since, with the exception of the issue in year 2000, which was edited by Dr. Ramanath Sharma. Since 2000 Dr. Tej Pandey has been the Managing Editor of Brahma-Vani.
3. Brahmakulum
After publication of the first BSNA directory, compiled by Dr. Shyam Shukla, in June 1994, the directory was renamed as Brahmakulum with Dr. Satchidanand Mishra as its editor who published it annually until the year 2000, when the EC decided to print it alternate years as a cost saving measure. The EC also decided to print a supplement of Brahmakulum during the years the complete edition was not published. The supplement included information about new members only.
4. BSNA Home Page
Dr. Vinod Tewary started the BSNA home page some time in early 1996. A year later Dr. Surendra Pandey and Mr. Chakradhar Sharma gave it a new face. Later on Mrs. Ranjana Sharma assumed the editorial role for the homepage. In early 2003 an editorial committee consisting of Drs. Tej Pandey, Surendra Pandey and Umesh Shukla, working with a web master from India redesigned the entire homepage giving it the present format. Dr. Tej Pandey continues to serve as the Homepage editor.
Education Program
In order to develop an education program for youth and children, BSNA appointed an Education Committee in 1998 with Dr. Surendra Pandey as its first Chair. Later, the education Committee’s work was transferred to one of the Vice Presidents of BSNA, Dr. Ramesh Paliwal, who has developed a set of lectures on Hinduism for youth and children. He has visited several chapters in the east coast where he conducted classes for children.
Dr. Shyam N. Shukla has also developed a series of lectures on Hinduism. They are on different topics, namely, History of Sanatana Dharma, Unique Gifts of Hinduism, Four Purusharthas, Social Structures, Sanskaras, Deities, and Festivals.
Global Networking with Brahmans Overseas
The BSNA Convention held at Troy, MI, witnessed another historic moment when Dr. Surendra N. Pandey, General Secretary of BSNA and Mr. Rameshwar Dayal Dixit, Secretary General of All India Kanyakubja Board (AIKB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) forming an official affiliation between the two organizations. The members of the BSNA Executive Committee witnessed the signing ceremony on July 5, 1997, and the General Body approved the MOU the following day. Using the first MOU as the guiding document Brahman Samaj of Nepal signed a similar agreement with BSNA in the year 2000.
In the year 2002, President Shukla visited Australia, New Zealand and Fiji for a pleasure trip. There he established personal contacts with Mr. Ram Pandey of Sydney, Mr. Rajiv Pandey of Auckland and Dr. Vivekanand Sharma of Suva.
In the summer of 2003 Mr. Jagprasad Pandey, a Brahman Leader from
Ahmedabad came to the USA and invited Dr. Shyam Shukla to visit Ahmedabad.
In November 2003 Dr. Shukla went to India and visited Navi Mumbai,
Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Bhopal to have personal contacts with Brahman
leaders of the places. Mr. Vinod Trivedi of Samast Brahman Samaj,
Navi Mumbai, Mr. Shashikant Tiwari of Sarayupari Brahman Samaj of
Ahmedabad, Mr. Shailesh Vyas of Rajkot and Mr. Rajani Kant Shukla
of Sarayuparin Brahman Sabha, Bhopal honored Dr. Shukla at special
functions and expressed their desire to establish permanent relationships
of their organizations with BSNA.
Salient Features of the BSNA (Compiled by Dr. Vinod Tewary)
BSNA is a social, cultural, educational, and religious organization with no political affiliations. The sole objective of the BSNA is to bring Brahmans together and help them seek their own cultural and social identity that has a tremendous psychological, social, economic, and political value. For a group to become a socio-economic force, it must evolve from a crowd to a community. The main task of the BSNA is to create a community of Brahmans by identifying the common cultural links.
BSNA has already achieved a North American identity. However, the community of Brahmans must transcend geographical and political boundaries. We must create an international community of Brahmans. The WBC is a step in that direction.
|
Science and Technology, and the consequent industrialization have brought about a fragmentation of society. In the present age of fragmented society and localized irrational forces, it is of paramount importance for individuals to form regional as well as international links and communities. Brahmanatva provides that much-needed link. |
Religion, traditions, and above all the "Samskar" are needed for being a Brahman. It is necessary to pass on the torch of Brahmanatva to the younger generation. BSNA acts as an enabler for passing that torch.
BSNA promotes a healthy respect for the tradition along with a progressive outlook and scientific attitude. BSNA strongly encourages our children to excel in modern education and their professions. Our motto is, "Derive strength from the past and move into the future."
BSNA promotes respect for all human beings and is strongly against all types of discriminations.
BSNA believes that we can have respect for different cultures only if we have respect for our own.
BSNA strongly disapproves the evils of the Hindu caste system. Brahmanatva, for it to have any contemporary relevance, must be above all petty considerations. Brahmanatva must evolve at each point of space and time, along with the new generation.
BSNA provides a platform for our youth to meet and develop contacts with other members of the community all over the world. The WBC would precisely serve that purpose. Matrimony has been an important consideration in every community in every part of the world. The BSNA provides potential contacts for those who want to marry in their own Brahman community.
BSNA has won the acceptance and respect of a large number of highly distinguished people from all over the world. Our membership includes scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, industrialists, and professionals from many different walks of life.
