The Vedas

The Vedas are considered the oldest Hindu texts written down some 2,500 years ago, though the tradition often dates them to the beginning of Kali-yuga (circa 3000 BCE). The following is an overview of the four Vedas.

Rig Veda: The most important and oldest of the Vedas. It is divided into ten books (called mandalas) and has 1028 hymns in praise of various deities. It also contains the famous Gayatri mantra and the prayer called the Purusha Shukta (the story of Primal Man).

Yajur-Veda: A priestly handbook for use in the performance of yajna.

Sama-Veda: This consists of chants and melodies to be sung during worship and the performance of yajna.

Atharva-Veda: Contains hymns, mantras and incantations, largely outside the scope of yajna.

Ramayana

Long ago in a kingdom there was a king named Dasaratha. He had two wives. His first wife was Kaulsalya. Kaulsalya had two sons. One was named Rama, and the other was named Lakshmana. Dasaratha's second wife was named Kaikeyi. Rama was the oldest son. Kaikeyi also had a son named Bharata.

Dasaratha decided to retire and transfer his kingdom to Rama. Rama was unmarried so he went to a king named Janaka and married his daughter Sita after a competitive ceremony.

The next day Kaikeyi's maid suggested that her son Lakshmana should be the next king. Kaikeyi asked how is this possible? Her maid said, "Use the two boons that the king had promised a long time ago".

Kaikeyi then asked Dasaratha for two boons. One boon was to make Bharata the next king instead of Rama." The second boon was to exile Rama to jungles for 14 years. Lakshmana decided to join Rama in exile.

In exile Lakshmana made Rama and Sita a cottage. One day Sita saw a beautiful deer. She asked Rama to get the deer. Then Sita heard someone say Oh Sita Oh Lakshmana. Sita asked Lakshmana to go and help Rama.

While Lakshmana was away Ravana, the 10 headed king of Sri Lanka, abducted Sita.

Then the great battle began and Ravana was killed. The talking monkeys and their leader Hanuman helped Rama find Sita. Everyone lived happily ever after.

India as also known as Bharata.

Update on WBO Activities, January 3, 2010

Dear All:

As you know, the WBC-2009 scheduled for December 26-28, 2009 was postponed due to circumstances beyond the control of the local organizers. The organizers have put a lot of hard work, their own money and emotions in preparing for the WBC-2009 which finally did not materialize. This was disappointing to the organizers, prospective attendees and Brahman leaders worldwide.

On December 26, 2009 Dr. Sangam Mishra, President of WBO, expressed his inability to continue as a President of the organization. Subsequently, a meeting was organized on December 26, 2009 at the residence of Shri R.D. Dixit in Delhi. This meeting was attended by members of the WBO BOT, EC, Nomination & Selection Committee, and a large number of other prominent Brahman leaders. The meeting minutes will be communicated in a separate e-mail. During this meeting the following course of action was decided:

  • Considering the services of Dr. Sangam Mishra and his team the organization should respect his wishes and relieve him of the duties of President of WBO effective December 26, 2009.

  • The WBC in India is cancelled and the next convention will be held in 2011 to keep the original frequency of WBO conventions as described in its constitution.

  • The Nomination and Selection Committee is reviewing the proposals from several countries to decide the host country of the WBC-2011 and WBO President. The committee will announce its decision by February 28, 2010 which will be immediately communicated to all.

  • Meanwhile, there is a need of an Interim President to continue the WBO activities seamlessly. The logical next person in line would have been Sri R.D. Dixit, the current Executive Vice President. However, keeping his ill health in mind it was decided to nominate Mr. Purushottam Sharma, USA. Mr. Purushottam Sharma has accepted the position and will assume the responsibilities of Interim President of WBO until the NSC declares the next President by the end of February 2010. Mr. Sharma will not continue as a member of the NSC.

Dr. Sangam Mishra and his team have served the organization very well beyond his initial commitment which he made on May 27, 2007 in Washington, DC. Dr. Mishra has done tremendous social work in India in the form of helping the poor, providing educational grants to needy students, etc. He was very helpful in increasing the visibility of the WBO in India and bringing different Brahman organizations together. We are proud of his accomplishments and very much appreciate his and his team’s services to Brahmans worldwide. Dr. Mishra will continue to be a big supporter of the WBO and its mission.

Best regards,

Dr. Om Sharma, Secretary, WBO
Dr. Shri Kant Mishra, Chairman, BOT of WBO

God's Work Dated November 1, 2009

Dear Friends:

If you care about the Poor, Terrorism and our Society, then help, no matter how small your help may be, even one child, one family, five families, one village or one community but help. It is said, drop by drop fills a bucket or an ocean. Poverty is the cause of all evils. God has made some people poor to test our will and give us an opportunity to serve Him.

With my very little resources, I have been able to build a Temple-School in a remote, very poor village of Ankraha surrounded by fifteen similarly poor villages with very little food or education in Jharkhand State of India for the spiritual, family and social education of the villagers in general that provides primary education to the children and night classes for the adults. My idea was to gather enough volunteer force to promote this mission but no one wants to work for free and go and work in the poor villages, especially in the area where Naxalite terrorists are taking advantage of the poverty and now asking for "one child from each family" to join their gangs. However, I am committed and I will be going again to that area with my wife to do whatever I can, in spite of warning from my family, friends and well-wishers.

If you are kind and generous and care for the poor and believe in God then I need your financial help for this God's work. This will help in hiring academic and spiritual teachers, providing one time food and basic clothing for the Temple-School children, paying for admission, books, other fees for very poor school children, providing one room hut for the homeless poor, helping helpless old and widows with clothes, marriage of poor girls, basic medicine for the sick and in other related work. Give 50, 100, 1,000, and 10,000 or more, whatever, you can as a DAAN (donation) for the education of the poor.

Make check payable to Vishnu Children Foundation (VCF) / J. Upadhyay. Full accounting of the funds will be given to the contributors.
